and much like the people of Westeros, we need to be prepared. as a southern manitoba girl, so i am no stranger to winter. in fact, i’m pretty much an expert. we’ve already discussed winter skincare in my previous post, so as i sip my apple cider and watch the snow falling through my kitchen window, i feel a wanting to write out a compilation of everything else i think is necessary to survive the winter.
1 UGG boots
whether you love or hate the Ugg style, they are easily the warmest, comfiest boots i’ve ever owned. i’m someone who is always cold, and i don’t even need to wear socks in these boots. i bit the bullet and bought my first pair 3 years ago, and i’m pretty sure i’ll never own a different pair of boots.
2 sweat pants
confession time - i didn’t own a single pair of sweatpants until i was 18 years old. buuut now, it’s been 4 years and i’m obsessed. i’m partial to the Victoria Secret PINK line because they’re SO soft and cozy, but basically, all sweatpants are like wearing Heaven on your legs.
3 tea/apple cider/peppermint anything
my obsession with festive drinks starts as soon as the leaves start to change colors. i spend a great deal of time (and money) at David’s Tea and my favourite local coffee shop. unfortunately i don’t have a starbucks in my town (hopefully soon!), but if i did, i would overdose on their peppermint white hot chocolate and eggnog lattes every single year.
oh, and if you’re looking for tea recommendations, might i suggest Chocolate Rocket, and Sugar and Spice from David’s tea, and if anyone ever offers you something called Nutcracker tea, just drink it. drink it all. i’m not sure where it’s available, but my local coffee shop had it last year, and it literally tastes like Christmas.
4 sherpa blankets
last year, i found a blanket that had gorgeous red flannel on one side, and warm, fuzzy Sherpa on the other, and i haven’t been cold a day since. obviously we all love to cuddle up with a blanket, perhaps in front of a fireplace or a sweet Netflix marathon, and let me just tell you… Sherpa is the way to go.
speaking of sweet Netflix marathons, sometimes that’s the best way to spend a bitterly cold winter day. i’m currently watching Archer (and LOVING it), and i’m going to start on Once Upon A Time soon. what’si in your Netflix queue? give me suggestions!
6 big sweaters
i’m currently wrapped up in a big black and white striped sweater, and it’s just so cozy! my closet doesn’t have enough space in it to contain all of my thick sweaters and oversized cardigans. it’s an easy outfit formula, and it’s practical enough to keep you warm through the entire winter – so do i think you can ever have enough cozy sweaters? heck no.
i’ve had frostbite on my ears 5 times, due to the amount of metal i insist on shoving through them. so needless to say, i own a lot of beanies (and headbands… earmuffs… you get the idea). to me, they’re a winter essential no matter where you live (unless it’s like.. the tropics or something…). but if it gets cold to any degree where you live, i would suggest investing in a beanie collection. they’re fashionable, but also totally practical. personally, i like the TNF ones because they’re double layered and keep my ears SO warm.
8 a really good playlist
as the seasons change, my entire playlist changes with it. in winter, i listen to a lot of angry, indie-rock music. i also find myself going through old playlists and absolutely devouring the nostalgia that comes along with the music i listened to in grade 10.
i’m also really into apps like pandora, or slacker radio. you know, where you can enter a song or artist you like and they come up with a whole ‘radio station’ they think you’ll like. it’s pretty cool for discovering new music, and winter is the best time to do that because, i mean… what else are you gonna do? it’s too cold to do anything else.
9 the Olympics
oh my god, you guys, i love the winter Olympics. this only happens every 4 winters, i know, but RUSSIA 2014 BITCHES. i’m so excited. if you don’t like the Olympics, you’re basically failing at life, i’m sorry to break it to you.
10 my dogs
if you know any one, single, solitary thing about me, it’s probably that i love my dogs. they are my favourite part of the day, my favourite way to wake up in the morning, and my favourite way to end the day. i have the sweetest dogs on the planet (yes i do. yes… yes i do. yes.), and so spending winter in my cave, with my dogs, makes the whole otherwise-miserable season bearable.
so, that’s my list! what’s on yours? what do you need to survive the treacherous cold of this awful, grey season? …can you tell i hate winter? can ya? ;)
not really, but hot damn does it feel like it. it’s gotten so cold here already, it’s crazy! my skin is drying out like you wouldn’t believe.
so let’s talk about skincare, shall we?
(just for reference, my skintype is pretty normal… not usually too dry or oily or anything, although this summer it did decide it wanted to be oily. i’m really hoping that was just due to the weird humidity we were having, though. but as a general rule, it’s really hard to break me out unless you rub bacon grease or you know, a covergirl foundation on my face.)
i have a pretty basic, not-hard-to-follow skincare routine. most of these products (read: all the st. ives products), i’ve been using since i was about 12 years old.
i obviously start by taking off all of my makeup. i use the Nivea Gentle Eye Makeup Remover CREAM version. this is the only eye makeup remover that does not make my eyes go insane and get infected. i’m totally screwed if they ever discontinue. then i use the Simple makeup removing wipes to take the rest off.
from there, i use the Aveeno Clarifying Skin Cleanser, to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup that may still be lingering on my face.
i like to exfoliate every day. i don’t know why, i just do. i prefer a really hardcore exfoliator. none of these fine scrubbing beads for me, i want to feel like i’m rubbing sandpaper on my face. i use the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. makes my skin feel like wonderfulness.
i follow that with the St. Ives Apricot Cleanser, and since it’s kind of thick and creamy, i’ve kind of used that as a mask - leave it on for a few minutes and let it really do it’s thing. it kind of burns, but in a good way, you know? and then i finish with a moisturizer (which changes all the time, i doubt that i’ve ever repurchased a moisturizer before).
once a week i use the St. Ives Mineral Clay Mask, which is a godsend when my skin is feeling particularly oily.
(other products and tips worth mentioning: i use Carmex like it’s my job. my lips get chapped so often, i have to have something on them at all times. over the years i’ve found that Carmex is just THE best lip balm. also worth mentioning, if you have dry hands and feet, use Vaseline!!! (whoa, calm down Oprah…) no, but honestly, it’s such a good thing to do! before you go to bed, slather your hands and feet in Vaseline, put on cotton socks and those little mini-mitts that do absolutely nothing for warmth but for SOME reason, everyone has like, a million pairs lying around, and in the morning your hands and feet will feel so soft. it’s like a $2 miracle, honestly.)
i should mention that i do all of that at night, and in the morning i just rinse my face off with water, apply some Carmex, and pile on the makeup.
so let’s talk about skincare… what products do you like to use in the winter? what keeps your skin feeling moisturized? actually, can anyone recommend one? it’s almost time for me to get another one :)
oops. i guess i abandoned this page again.
let’s talk about fall.
i’ve discovered my new favourite autumn eyeshadow look of all time, and it requires like, 7 different Urban Decay shadows, 5 different brushes, and about 20 minutes, but hey. it looks good.
(i don’t have a photo handy, but in case you’re wondering, it’s Missionary applied all over the lid, a teensy bit of Baked just on the high point of the eye, Cobra in the outer-V area, use Bender to blend Cobra into Baked, put Sin on the browbone, and use Zephyr in the inner corner. use a pencil liner on the outer corner of the waterline, as well as the full tightline and a thin line on the top lashine, smudge out with a little bit of Gunmetal on a brush, and then use a big, fat mascara brush to get full, awesome lashes. nothing unique, but i like it).
i absolutely love Strong Woman by MAC and i will be wearing it on my lips all fall/winter long.
apparently my skin has decided it wants to be oily now, so the Olay Fresh Effects Shine, Shine, Go Away cleanser has been my best friend for the past few months (smells sickly sweet, like way too much chocolate, but you get used to it).
also, i bought Beetlejuice pants and they are awesome. and i’m obsessed with studded things, and i think it’s becoming an issue. i may have to join some type of support group.
tell me about you fall makeup/fashion/everything!
OH MY GOD. it’s been, like, 20+ degrees this week in manitoba and i am SUPER excited about it. of course, with the rising temperatures comes a slew of new beauty products. here are the products that i rely on in the summertime:
jergens natural glow daily moisturizer: i’m not a big fan of a tan from a bottle, i prefer to get my color the hanging out at the beach or in my awesome back yard (i know, i know, UV rays, skin cancer, etc… don’t worry, i use SPF 81274). but during the first few weeks of summer, when my skin is so white it’s practically glowing, i rely pretty heavily on this product to get me through until i am no longer …blinding. it’s a gradual build, and it’s very hard to apply wrong so you don’t need to worry about streaks or patches! and it doesn’t smell terrible, which is nice!
coppertone oil free sunscreen lotion: it’s my favourite because it’s oil free - let’s be real, no one needs any extra shine on their face during the summer, am i right?
aveeno active naturals skin relief moisturizing lotion: SUCH a life saver. i burn super easily, and this is the only way that i’m able to, like, wear clothes or get in bed without bursting into flames. i found it two summers ago when i was at a resort with my family, and i burned super badly after spending a day on the boat (despite the layers upon layers of SPF 60 i was wearing). i ran to the nearest Target to search desperately for Aloe. they were out, but i picked this up instead. it has an awesome cooling action, so it soothes your skin imminently, while moisturizing and hydrating your skin for long-term relief and repair. seriously. if you don’t own this, go buy it. like 20 minutes ago.
physicians formula mineral wear talc-free correcting power: in the summertime, my foundation routine goes down to the minimum. i don’t like to wear a primer, but i have a teensy bit of hyper-pigmentation, so i prefer to. this is super light and corrects the discoloration in my skin like a dream.
NYC sun n’ bronze bronzing powder: i’m not a huge bronzer/blush/face person, but this is a recent discovery that i love. it’s got a nice color to it, the perfect amount of shimmer, and it gives this flawless, sunny glow without being overbearing. definitely worth the $4 ;)
chapstick SPF 30: this is super basic, but definitely necessary. there is nothing worse that sunburned lips, my god. aaaaaaand that’s it. this is what keeps my summertime beauty regiment in check. what are your favourite sunshine-weather products? :)
thatubiquitousinfluence & eriknightismybabe
you guys are awesome, thanks so much! :)
it is finally starting to warm up where i live (+3 on friday, what whaaat!), and in celebration, i have broken out my entire spring wardrobe, and i’ve starting spring-ifying my daily makeup.
if you know me at all, or even if you just follow me on instagram, you know that i’m obsessed with lip products. such a great way to bring a little color or fun into a look! so with that, i thought i’d do a post all about my top 10 lip colors for spring. it’s a mix of drugstore and high end makeup, and a variety of colors, so there’s something for everyone! we’ll start with the glosses, and then get into lipsticks/liners.
Pose is a cute little iPhone app that’s kind of like instagram, but just for fashion/OOTD photos and that kind of stuff. it’s really cool! :)
let’s follow each other!
urban decay’s 24/7 liquid eyeliner in perversion is the greatest thing i have ever put on my eyelids and i am in love with it. i want to marry it and have a wonderful life on the beach with it.
too far? i don’t even care
